Exophiala dermatitidis is a type of fungus that belongs to the black yeast species. It is commonly found in soil and decaying organic matter such as dead plant material and wood. E. dermatitidis is a potential human pathogen that can cause a wide range of diseases including skin and nail infections, sinusitis, and respiratory tract infections. It is also known to cause severe infections in individuals with weakened immune systems, particularly those with HIV/AIDS, cancer or on immunosuppressive therapy. E. dermatitidis is difficult to diagnose and treat, as it shows high resistance to antifungal drugs and can remain latent in the body for extended periods without causing any symptoms. Prevention of E. dermatitidis infection is best accomplished through good hygiene, avoidance of contaminated soil, and prompt treatment of infections associated with the fungus.
